We are hardwired to conform. Studies show we do this to the extent that our brain is capable of rewriting its memories, providing us with a false narrative of things that did not happen so we can fit in with the group norm. In terms of our long-term survival this relatively crazy ability makes perfect sense because conforming absolves us of responsibility and requires way less cognitive reflection. This allows us to save energy. The calorific ROI becomes manageable.
The fact is we don't live in an age where the calories we burn are key to our survival. The quality of our thoughts is however.
Be the one who thinks in the crowd. Be the one who looks and sees. Be the one who asks the hard questions and seeks to get to the really hard answers.
Be different from the crowd.
