The control you seek to help always comes from the inside. Self-control is the result of carefully imposing order upon our instincts.
Fear, hunger, thirst, desire, panic. These will shut down the higher executive functions of the brain by weakening the connections between the brainstem and the prefrontal cortex. Keeping those connections alive and exercising self-control requires conscious effort.
When we control ourselves we also begin to impose order upon the world. It can no longer cause us to react.
