The fragile self is a construct we do not control ourselves because we didn't create it.

If all your identity is a construct created out of external factors (the possession of material things, the opinion of others, the expectations of your family, etc) then it takes only a small change in these factors which you do not control to threaten your sense of who you are.

Fragility in our sense of self happens when we have not taken the steps necessary to develop grit and resilience.
