Optimism is the result of a mental response that activates the rostral anterior cingulated cortex (RACC) and the right amygdala in the brain. The RACC helps us regulate negative emotions that short-circuit the brain's higher functions and, as such hack reality: 

We are what we say because what we say is what we think. What we think ends up being what we do.
